is the structure good in formal writing

I came across this sentence"Take the current debate raging over oil drilling in a corner of the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge. " in an article written by Charles Krauthammer ("Saving Nature, But Only for Man". It's about environmental protection). What follows the word "take" is supposed to be an example.
My question is: Can students use this kind of structure in formal writing?

    Introducing the example with 'take'?
    No.
OK for magazine-type commentaries and a reporter's dedicated column in a newspaper, and informal conversations.

Thank you. That article is taken from "Time".

    "...and a reporter's dedicated column..."

"The noted columnist, Charles Krauthammer, recently wrote about the need to make intelligent choices among varying environmental and developmental actions: `Saving Nature, But Only for Man'"

A dedicated (and noted!) columnist...and in America...
