    Noun Phrase Analysis

    Hello!
I'm a student of English in Slovenia and I need help with a phrase analysis for my assignment.
    The sentence is:

The number of people given suspended prison sentences and ordered to do at least 300 hours' community work also increased in the same period.

The noun phrase = The number of people given suspended prison sentences and ordered to do at least 300 hours' community work

    I came that far:
    1. The = PreM = Art
    2. number = H = N
    3. of people given suspended prison sentences and ordered to do at least 300 hours' community work = PostM = PP

    3.1. of = H = Prep
3.2. people given suspended prison sentences and ordered to do at least 300 hours' community work = Prep. Compliment

    3.2.1. people = H = N

The problem is that I am not sure, what is the rest of the phrase, beginning with "given".
I would be very thankful for any help you can give me.

    Re: Noun Phrase Analysis

    Hello Nadia

We encourage learners to do their own work, so I can't really provide you with the answers you seek; well, maybe except for a wee bit of help with parsing the sentence.

    Notice the ellipsis ([...]):
The number of people [that were] given suspended prison sentences and [that were][of] community work ordered to do at least 300 hours also increased in the same period.

    Re: Noun Phrase Analysis

Thank you, now I can see, that this is a restrictive relative clause within a noun phrase.
    Would this analysis be correct?

    1. The = PreM = Art
    2. number = H = N
    3. of people given suspended prison sentences and ordered to do at least 300 hours' community work = PostM = PP

    3.1. of = H = Prep
3.2. people given suspended prison sentences and ordered to do at least 300 hours' community work = Prep. Compliment

    3.2.1. people = H = N
3.2.2. given suspended prison sentences and ordered to do at least 300 hours' community work = Clause

    3.2.2.1. given = VP = H = Verb
3.2.2.2. suspended prison sentences = NP

    3.2.2.2.1. suspended = PreM1 = Adj
    3.2.2.2.2. prison = PreM2 = N
    3.2.2.2.3. sentences = H = N

    3.2.2.3. and = ?
3.2.2.4. ordered to do = VP

    3.2.2.4.1. ordered = H = Verb
    3.2.2.4.2 to do = PostM = Infinitive

    3.2.2.5. at least = AdvP = Adv
    3.2.2.6. 300 hours' community work = NP

    3.2.2.6.1. 300 = PreM = Num
    3.2.2.6.2. hours = H = N
    3.2.2.6.3. community work = NP

    3.2.2.6.3.1. community = PreM = N
    3.2.2.6.3.2. work = H = N

Sorry for the long analysis, I hope it is clear. I would be happy if there was anybody who could correct me. :)
(maybe a stupid question - in order to do a phrase analysis, do I have to define anything else except for PreM/H/PostM? in other words, do I have to define word classes?)
