    Understanding the usage of "Otherwise".

    Dear Friends,

    In the following sentence:

"He now insisted that he had recognized me and congratulated me on the effectiveness otherwise of my disguise"

I understand that "otherwise" is functioning as an adverb, but couldn't appreciate its usage in the sentence - ".....congratulated me on the effectiveness otherwise of my disguise"

    Could anyone help?

    Regards,
    Sabya

Backhanded compliment. The disguise was excellent, but even then "he" recognized "me".

    Thanks Anglika.

    Can the be rephrased as

"He now insisted that he had recognized me and otherwise congratulated me on the effectiveness of my disguise" ?

The second, newer alternative sounds okay to me. The first example simply strikes me as a misuse of the word otherwise. It's not needed there at all.
