    Question hook, line, and sinker

    When someone believe something hook, line, and sinker, that means he/she believes it without reservation.

    But from where did the expression come?

    Does it come from the world of fishing (sinker)? or what?

    Thanks :)

    'Hook, line and sinker' is an expression that refers to fishing gear.

    Hook= fishing hook
    Line= fishing line (to which the hool is attached)
    Sinker= a heavy (often lead) object attached to the fishing line which keeps it and the hook from floating on the water

    So, when someone 'swallows' information 'hook, line and sinker,' she believes it without reservation, as you say. It is often used to describe uncritical belief.

    I hope this is helpful,

    Petra

    Re: hook, line, and sinker

    It is fishing language. It means with absolute totality, usually of a belief, especially an unjustified or foolish belief.
