was/had been exhausted and owed (for) medical expenses

My savings account was/had been totally exhausted through paying my hospital bills and I still owed the hospital (for) medical expenses.

Should I use 'was' or 'had been' and is 'for' needed?

    Many thanks.

Paying my hospital bills completely exhausted my savings, any I still owe the hospital for my medical expenses.

I had comletely exhausted my savings paying my hosptial bills, but I still owed them more.
