    Modern is recent, as opposed to ancient. It could have been a hundred years ago, but if we are comparing then to something a thousand years ago, it would be "modern."

    Contemporary is within your current lifespan, or more properly, now.

    Modern music might include music composed anytime after, maybe, 1900 (I'm no musician; I'm just guessing here) whereas contemporary music is something composed in the last very few years.

    Picasso was a modern artist. Any artist still living is contemporary.
