close to the vest/ in the interim/ budding romance

    Dear teachers,

Here are a few sentences from an English text that attracted my attention:

They had gone out on three dates since then. He wasn’t quite sure how she felt about him, Sheila keeping her feelings close to the vest, so to speak.

The expression “close to the vest“ means to be guarded or secretive about information

That was about a week ago, and in the interim they had spoken on the phone a couple of times. So in his mind, at least, there was the possibility of a budding romance, and this small favor was really no big deal.

interim = an interval of time between one event, process, or period and another, time between acts

in the interim = in the meantime

budding romance = rising romance , growing romance, blooming romance

    Thank you for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V.

V - Always look at the surrounding sentences to get clues about the meanings. Here's how I see it:

They had gone out on three dates since then. He wasn’t quite sure how she felt about him, Sheila keeping her feelings to herself, so to speak.

That was about a week ago, and in the meantime, they had spoken on the phone a couple of times. So in his mind, at least, there was the possibility of a possible relationship, and this small favor was really no big deal.
