    1) It's one of those things that take you by surprise.
    2) It's one of those things that takes you by surprise.


    Can someone please tell me which of the above two sentences is correct?

    I would say number one, however, I think number 2 might be correct, after all we are talking about "one of those things"

    1) is correct.
    The subject of the subordinate clause "that take you by surprise" is "things". Many things take you by surprise, and this is only one of them.
    Of those things that take you by surprise, this is one.

    However, consider:
    2) It's the only one of those things that takes me by surprise.
    Here the subordinate clause refers to "one".
    Of those things, this is the only one that takes me by surprise.
