    Participle or gerund??

    Hi,

Can somebody help me to indentify the word "making" in the phrase below. Is a participle or gerund?

"We were dismayed to learn that our neighbours were untidy, disagreeable, and uninterested in making new friends"

This could be a gerund because it is the object of the preposition "in".

On the other hand, this could be a participle because it is an adjective used to describe the noun phrase "new friends".

    What is it? Please help.

    Hi mlsbbe

We were dismayed to learn that our neighbours were untidy, disagreeable, and uninterested in making new friends.
    1. This could be a gerund because it is the object of the preposition "in".

    2. This could be a participle because it is an adjective used to describe the noun phrase "new friends".

Gerunds can take objects. The object of the gerund making is new friends.
