I'm asked to give how many letters, syllables and sounds are in the following words with one example given.
eg: key- 3 letters, 1 syllable and 2 sounds /ki:/
vegetable, letter, word, rhythm, tomato, flattery, organisation, chocolate.
I have no problems with the number of letters and syllables, however I don't know how to figure out the number of sounds.
If someone could explain it to me it would be greatly appreciated.
For example, some sounds are made of more than one letter - ch, th ...
So the sounds in chocolate (as I say it) [email protected]/ where @ is schwa, are:
/tch/ /o/ /k/ /l/ /@/ /t/ That's six sounds.
