    hold the press!

The sentence goes: Hold the press, Vicki's got the lead in the play.

I couldn't find the explanation for this idiom.
Is there any similar one that could be used instead?

    Thank you!

    Re: hold the press!

It comes from newspapers, where if a massive new story breaks, the printing presses were stopped until the new story had been written up and inserted on the front page.

    Re: hold the press!

... but it sounds a bit odd to me - as if it were a mixture of two expressions (that are commonly used: 'Stop press' and 'Hold the front page' (that is, there's a big story about to break and we need the space in a prominent position, rather than in the 'Stop press' column usually reserved for late-breaking news).

Hold the presses: Vicki's got the lead in the play.

Alert the media: Vicki's got the lead in the play.
