    After or Later??

    Dear all,

Id like to have your views on the following sentences:

    1) I got married when I was 27 and AFTER 4 years I had my first child.
    2) I got married when I was 27 and 4 years LATER I had my first child.
    3) I got married when I was 27 and 4 years AFTER I had my first child.

    My opinion:

    1) This sentence is very unusual, but I am unable to see any restriction other than collocation to dismiss it. In other words, its acceptable since
the idea of an event that follows another in time, if not directly expressed
is, at least, implied, since there are no concurrent events in the sentence that might confuse the listener.

    2) This is for me the best choice as a sentence. Here the idea of subsequent events is clearly expressed.

    3) This sentence is also acceptable since the position of the phrase '4 YEARS' leaves no doubt about the position in time of the event to be mentioned next, in relation to the previous one. Just for the sake of emphasis I would perhaps include the pronoun THAT after AFTER to remove the ellipsis.

Once again, thank you very much for your valuable help!!

Yes, I would agree, you had better put the "THAT" in there ... "and after THAT [marriage] I had my first child.

Otherwise, it means you had your first child at age 23.

    Re: After or Later??

May I understand that my assumptions about the other sentences are correct?
    Cheers,

Yes, except that there is nothing clumsy about Sentence 1.
