    Playing out the string

Hi! I didn't catch the expression *playing out the string" when referred to an athlete that apparently is at the end of the career. The athlete is a fighter. What does it mean?
    Thanks a lot for answering.

    Re: Playing out the string

    I am not a teacher.

You usually see this more in team sports where a certain amount of games are scheduled. Even if a team has no chance of making the playoffs (qualifying for championship tournament), they still have to show up and play the games that are on the schedule.

They have to see it to the end and continue to play if only for their own honor.
