    Re: response to whats up

    A good question

If it was the first statement of a conversation, I would understand it as "hello" or "hi" and yet I'd reply with "hello" or "hi." If it was not the first, I would understand it as "how are you?" or "how are you doing?" and yet I'd reply with "I'm ok" or "I'm fine" and so on.

As a conversational opener or an informal greeting, 'What's up?' is the equivalent of 'How are you?' 'How are you doing?', etc.
Two very common replies are, 'Not much, and you?' and 'Oh, the same old thing. How about you?' Some people say, 'Same old, same old,' which means nothing new is happening in their lives.

If I am occupied at a task or talking to another person and someone approaches me with the obvious desire of speaking to me, I might say, 'What's up?' as a way of discovering what it is s/he wants to ask or say. The response to this is simply to state your object in approaching the person.

    Best wishes,

    Petra
