    Dear sash:

'Mr.' is used for any man.
'Mrs.' is used for a married woman who has taken her husband's last name.
'Ms.' may be used for any woman, married or not.

If you don't know the person's gender, you can address your correspondence to Mr./Ms. Xxxxx Xxxxx.
Beginning a message, you can use the formula of
    'Dear Sir or Madam:

    I hope this is helpful,

    Petra

so, there is not a word that can be used for both; there is not only one word that can be suitable for addressing men and women

for example, if i want to thank you and i don't know your gender, what shall i say?

No, there is no unisex form of address that I can think of. In your example, you could say, 'Thank you, Petra.'

In the case of a professional person, you can address her/him as Doctor X or Professor Y.

If the correspondence is going to be of any duration, the person may eventually say something that will let you know his/her gender. You can also just ask! ('Please forgive me, but I'd like to address you properly, and I don't know if you are a man or a woman.') Very few people would be troubled by this.

    Best wishes,

    (Ms.) Petra Young
