    Red face nightmare-giving commas...

    Hello,

Please tell me if the comma is OK in:

We jumped on the Paris to Brussels train, and soon afterwards fell asleep.

Is there an online reliable guide to punctuation rules (esp. comma usage)?

The use of comma is not set in stones. This is a very important thing to have in mind when you get down to studying punctuation.
I also had a very hard time learning it without any assistance other than books, becase of the inconsistence in usage in them.

"and" in your sentence is a coordinating conjunction. Pedagogical grammar books claim they are to be preceded by a comma.
    That is not entirely true.
When the clauses are short (What does the subjective term 'short' mean?) and well-balanced, you can drop the comma.
To draw an analogy, commas to sentences are often like brakes to cars.
