hiring announcements fell for the second straight month

    Hello.

    Job-cut plans jump - Aug. 3, 2004
NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - The number of job cuts planned by U.S. employers rose in July, while hiring announcements fell for the second straight month, an outplacement firm said Tuesday.

"... while hiring announcements fell for the second straight month"
How does this sound to you?
Wouldn't it be better to say "... while the number of hiring announcements fell for the second straight month"?

    Hi Daruma,
It adds no clarity to the sentence to add "the number of." It's entirely clear what is meant without it.

So while I don't find your addition incorrect, I don't find it an improvement either.
