    mopping (in) the kitchen

I was mopping in the kitchen, so I didn't hear the phone ring.

    Is 'in' optional or necessary?

    Many thanks.

    Hi Tan Elaine

Ellipsis works, but it might sound awkward to some:

    • I was mopping the kitchen (floor), so I didn't hear the phone ring.

    Dear Elaine and Soup:

Yes, it's got to be either:

I was mopping in the kitchen
or I was mopping the kitchen floor.

because one does not 'mop the kitchen'.

    Best wishes,

    Petra

In your dialect, maybe not, but in mine the phrase is perfectly good English.

Oh yeah? Tell that to my mom back in Illinois. Boy, will she be relieved.
