Did they manage? Did they have success? Were they ...? What's the regular way to turn an adjective into an adverb?

PS At a deeper level there should be no adverb; if they managed 'ultimately' or 'eventually' or 'partially' or 'with flying colours' ...(or any other adverb that modifies the verb) that would be OK. But 'they managed' implies that they were successful; using the adverb this exercise wants is the sort of thing that gets adverbs a bad name.
