hip to the beat - meaning

What is the meaning of "hip to the beat"?

I'd love to be in charge of the music.
I'm very hip to the beat , if I say so myself.
I used to be quite the musician.

    Thank you!!

Re: hip to the beat - meaning

It means "sensitive to the rhythm." Hip can mean cool, nice, amazing, loyal, well-disposed, righteous, etc. It even started in the 30's as "hep" in a jazz song about rhythm. I believe that song was called "Jumping jive."
