"To have a spring in one's step" = to be lighthearted, so that one moves with energy

As to your second query, what is the context of use? Is it from a TV crime series?

I actually don't know, I am guessing it means someone got tired from a cleaning duty, like mopping the floor, and started the engine to breath some more pure air.
    Does that make any sense?

If it is in an employment situation, "going on (my) break" means going for your lunch, or a short allotted coffee/tea break.
