    handle sharps

Needlestick injuries occur during certain situations:
-when sharps are disposed of improperly
-during collision with a sharp or with a health care worker handling the sharp

What is the meaning of "handle" in this context?
    - to dispose of
    - to use

    Thanks

    Dear alla:

Soup has provided a good definition of 'handle'. The reason the verb is used in this context is that the health care worker could be preparing the sharp (usually a hypodermic needle), giving someone an injection, taking a blood sample or disposing of the used needle. All of these actions involve 'handling' the sharp.

    Best wishes,

    Petra
