    The character of Portia is.......... She/ It ...........

    Which is correct: she or it?

    'character' is a non-gender reference term, but Portia is a person, and female: "The character of Portia..." / "Portia is a character in the play..."; and so when referring to her, it's 'she'.

    The theme of appearance versus reality is introduced through Portia's character. She is...... (not it)
