    Reported speech- about tenses

    Hello to everyone!
I am new in this forum.
I have a question and will be pleased if you reply me.

Direct speech: " I'm so sorry that I was late."
Indirect : She said she was sorry that she had been late.

OR : She said she was sorry that she was late.

    Which is the correct one?
Does the tense of the second verb have to change?

    Thank you in advance!!!

she is apologising for being (having been) late at some time in the past.
If she was late at the time of speaking, she would say "i'm sorry that i am late". But you probably know that.

indirect : She said she was sorry that she had been late.
Or : She said she was sorry that she was late.

either of these will do. The first is more grammatically pure, and is the correct answer for exams. The second is probably more often used in actual speech; and you will note that it is also the indirect version of "i'm sorry i'm late".

    thank you in advance!!!
    r.

PS: Forgive the lack of capitals. This is a persistent software fault.
