what type of verb is pay?

I came across a sentence that puzzles me. I just don`t understand what kind or type of verb is pays here:

If teaching pays well, then you... .

Can I say: If teaching is well paid ,....
and, what`s the difference between pays and is paid.

Thank you very much in advance.

In that context pays well means profitable. That meaning doesn't work here, though, because it's usually the case that a person, not the person's profession, is paid well:

    • If [the job] teaching is paid well, ...
