    buring or burned

    Dear teachers,

Please advise me which word is correct between burning and burned in the below sentence.

Can you smell something burning / burned in the kitchen?

An exercise book is saying I have to choose "burning".
But, I presume there could be a certain situation where I can say burned instead of burning.
I would like to know how the native speakers feel about "burned", if it sounds very unnatural, awkward.

I'm not a native, but I guess you could you it in one way. Let's say someone has burned something and kind of wants to cover it up. That person could then ask "can you still smell someting burned here?".

Maybe it's best if a native can confirm this.

It depends on the context. If you walk into the room and smell something burning, then it is happening at this minute. If you walk into the room and there is a smell of something that has burned, then the burning has taken place and is in the past.
