Is Sit-Up and Crunch Same Thing?

Hi, teachers. English is my 2nd language. I had known the word sit-up(name of an excercise) for many years but lately I heard in a video game the fitness coach call the excercise "crunch" .

Is sit-up and crunch same thing?

    Or are there any differences?

Re: Is Sit-Up and Crunch Same Thing?

The noun 'sit-up' was used when I was at school, but a more violent, strenuous (and risky) manoeuvre - involving sitting up and continuing the rotation until the trunk is nearly flat (so the rotation is more than 90 degrees but more like 165 degrees - and the exerciser typically aims to approach 180 degrees [at the expense of the lumbar vertebrae]. This is called a 'stomach crunch', commonly abbreviated to 'crunch'. I imagine the violence of the metaphor encourages users to greater self-harm!
