Question a folder in American schools

Hi! I am wondering what 'a folder' means in the school ?
(like English folder, geometry folder, and etc.)
Are there pockets in a folder?

(I've read a sentence in a novel. : I put my paper in one of the pockets, and stuffed the folder into the backpack.)

Is it something like a notebook or something?
Or just a cover for school papers?

Re: a folder in American schools

A folder is a special device used to hold papers:

It usually has two sides with flaps (called pockets) to hold the papers inside. The two sides are then folded together to close the folder. In school, you may have a folder for each class to hold the papers or assignments that your teacher gives you. It is separate from the notebook you use for taking notes.
