    purpose

    Why did you push him?

    1-It was to not let him get close to you.
    2-It was not to let him get close to you.

    3-What I did was to not let him get close to you.
    4-What I did was not to let him get close to you.

    Which of the above correspond to which of the below:
    a-I pushed him in order to prevent him from getting close to you.
    b-I pushed him but my intention was not to let him get close to you.
    c-The sentence is ambiguous and the context will make its meaning clear.

    "a" is the clearest answer to the question, "Why did you push him." The other sentences are somewhat confusing and unclear. The other sentences are not the way in which this message would normally be communicated. I hope this helps.
