    You could use that phrase if you meant that things you were doing were getting in the way of what you wanted to do.

    I wanted to get to the match, but I messed myself around so much trying to sort out the timetable that I missed the train.

    As for the rude interpretation, that's usually referred to as messing around with myself.

    I would say no. You could say:

    I was messing myself up.

    The meaning here is that you were causing some problems for yourself. Is this your meaning?
