    There is vs there are

    A debate between teachers....

There is a large number of people.

There are a large number of people.

I personally think it is the second as people is plural and "a large number of people" means many people.
BUT other English teachers I know are adamant that the correct version is the FIRST option using "is". The main reason being that "because NUMBER is singular"....
Can an expert please put us out of our misery? WHO is right? Option 1 or 2?

    Hej san,

It depends on whether you want to achieve grammatical or notional concord.

Grammatical concord means 'number' is singular and so has to be 'is'.
Notional concord means there are many people and thus the plural form of 'be' is used.
