    which word is suitable for the follwing sentence? "range" or " amount" ?
    "the newspaper didn't mention the..........of the damge caused by fire"

    I would say "amount" here

    (I've been teaching English for over 10 years, but I haven't got a certificate)

    '...mention the amount of damage' is not ungrammatical, and there are contexts where it would fit perfectly. But when I speak a foreign language I often take refuge in abstract words; I think a lot of people do, because it's the abstract words that tend to have cognates.

    I think the most likely form of your sentence would be 'the newspaper didn't say how much damage was done...'.
