    Use of 'the' before abbreviations

In the naming of warships, often the abbreviations USS, HMS, HMCS, HMAS, etc, are used instead of the written out terms. Is it correct to preface these abbreviations with the word 'the' or more correct to leave 'the' out as in the example " I visited HMS MANCHESTER this morning" vice I visited the HMCS YUKON this afternoon. With the terms beginning with HM for Her Majesty's the question becomes confusing given that 'her' is not a noun.

    Thanks

    Ray

You should not use the article 'the'.
