    What are infinitives?

I know they are words like 'to see, to know etc.

But are they considered a special verb, or a noun or both? I can't seem to find a consistent answer.

    Thanks for the help

    Re: What are infinitives?

They have characteristics of both, but in English I think they are more verbal. In some languages they take on functions more like the English gerund. (For an example where they seem to do so in English: "to err is human".)

Infinitives are verbs in their non-conjugated state. For simple example: the verb 'to run':
    I run.
    You run.
    He runs.
    We/they run. All present tense.

I, you, he, we, they ran. Past tense.

    Re: What are infinitives?

    what about in situations like:

"Kevin likes to run"-now it is the object word of like, is it still a verb

    or

"To run is great"-now it is acting like the subject
