    grammar

    Hi everyone,
the choice of tenses can sometimes be a matter of ear rather than hard-and-fast rules.
Which of the following tenses in bold type would most of you opt for?

It will be the first time I will see a movie star at close quarters
It will be the first time I will have seen a movie '' '' '' ''
    It will be the first time I see '' '' '' '' '' '' ''

As in many other cases, I haven't been able to find any convincing usage examples in my grammar reference books.

    Thanks for your help.

#2 is the correct form in BrE.

An AmE speaker would probably opt for an infinitival construction,

It will be my first time to see....

, which neatly avoids tense-choice problems.

Thank you philo. Do all AmE forum members agree?
    Kindly enlighten!

    I would say:
This will be the first time I've seen a movie star...
Note that I'm not claiming this to be the most grammatically correct.

    Re: grammar

Or you could branch out with 'I'm going to see a movie star at close quarters'

    Re: grammar

N.B. Another easy-to-use construction that even BrE speakers sometimes employ would be:

I'll be ...ing for the first time.

    Re: grammar

I'd choose 'It will be the first time I see...'.

    Re: grammar

The following two corpora opt for present perfect.

Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA)
    British National Corpus (BYU-BNC)

This seems the most natural to me too.
