If I were you, I would
- focus on what they have already had (lg courses, materials...)
- study the criteria they have met to attend my class!
- define a 'survival' level with which the current class would go on
- think of the components of the above
- consult an assessment expert there
- use the existing placement tests or develop my own (which is more difficult)
