    what are verbs--please help

What are verbs? I know they are not naming words(nouns) that call for people, places and things, but then why do we explain then as a word that shows action? Isn't an action a thing? Wouldn't that mean verbs are nouns?

OR is the difference between them just a noun is stating an object, where a verb is not, but more expressing the motion of what is going on, not a thing.

Please help me clear this up, thanks
