    hoping for some solution

I have some problems in understanding and remembering what i read. I am just not able to find the right technique. if i read through a paragraph ,I just happen to remember the last sentence of the paragraph , and not the entire paragraph. how should i hold on the entire contents. as i read , i just forget about the previous sentence.. i am not able to club it .. so , basically , after i read , a long paragraph or something , i am just not able to tell anyone , what all i have read.

if i read anything ,say about 10 lines, then i have trouble in explaining that. because, its simply not stored in the brain.. i am not sure , i am reading blindly or what. do i have to concentrate more while reading ? and keep telling myself what i am reading , so that way i remember what i read.. but then , i feel that i am mugging up the entire text or not trying to understand. i dont knw how to store an entire paragraph, after understanding it .. my vocab is average. i do know meanings of each word , but probably i am not able to understand meaning of group of words.

so i am talking about 2 problems here .. firstly ..trouble in understanding what i read. .
and the 2nd is , how to keep it in my mind ..

need ur advice on this ,as i am facing severe problems due to this .

    Hi!
I think you should consult a doctor about this problem. Perhaps he will prescribe you vitamins or recommend some exercises for your memory.

I would use mind maps or brainstorming to remember things.

It is not clear exactly what your problem is. If it is simply that you cannot recall the exact words you have read, then no-one expects that. Your mind should be able to process them into a general and overall sense. Are you trying to read too fast? Better to take it slowly and make sure it makes sense. It is not the meaning of each word that matters, but the way in which they interact and collocate.

You could try keeping a notebook beside you and, at the end of each paragraph read, noting down what you understand that paragraph to be saying.

If there is a deeper problem, and you have as much trouble in your own language as in English, then you ought to consult a specialist in brain and neurological problems..

    Re: hoping for some solution

    appreciate your quick response.

yeah even i felt so ,maybe i was reading a bit too quick than i can comprehend.. i have infact spent lot of time in analysing myself while reading ever since i have found out this problem.

if i lower my reading speed, i do understand what i read, problem is , i am not quite sure about the next step. how do i process this ' understanding' . how do i store this understanding ..
say for ex , i read 5 lines frm a book . i can understand those 5 lines individually , but , by the time i reach on 5th line, i just forget what i have read in the previous 4 lines... ( even though i have understood those lines ) . i then have to regress . i have also implemented 'searching topic sentence' and 'finding keywords' technique , but using these , i think that i am just mugging up . its not happening naturally.

because , if little while later , if i am asked to explain what i read, i have to recollect what i had read, what were the keywords and all . it doesnt happen fluently.. for ex, some of my colleagues , when they are asked to explain any concepts ,they do that with utmost ease, without breaking up ... its like the concept is stored in their head.. they havent mugged up .. but basically they are just explaining what they have understood ..
unfortunately this is something , i have not been able to achieve.
i read anything , be it a technical stuff or an topic which interests me, but i am just not able to explain it .. coz, i just dnt remember anything what i have reading. ( maybe i am not storing it in the 1st place ) ..

i am really confused with this . i am not sure where i am going wrong ..
is it with how i am reading or is it the way i am processing what i am reading ..

is it something to do with 'working memory ' ? ..

    anticipating your reply.

    Re: hoping for some solution

It is far more likely that you are trying to read beyond your actual ability. Go back to simpler material and see if the same situation occurs. Also, stop analysing yourself - it is not helping you!

Whatever you read, try to write down in your own words what you think is being said.

    I think it's a question of concentration.

Are you trying to read while something else is going on, like maybe a radio or TV is on???????? I can do that in English, and basically understand both, but I can't do it in my limited French.

    Re: hoping for some solution

no .. i make sure i dont get distracted while reading a particular matter.. with the probs i am already experiencing ,losing focus is the last thing i need.

its jst not about reading.. i face the same problem while listening to a conversation or even watching a movie .

i am able to understand at that very instant ( line by line ) .. but just as i move forward, to some other part, i am just not able to hold on to what i read /heard previously..
am i missing something here... any methodology that i need to adopt..
just how i am i supposed to store what i have understood..

also , i have observed that if i understood a particular sentence ,then while explaining the same , i tend to make use of the same words , that i encountered while reading.. i am unable to explain them in my own words,
even though i have fairly understood what the sentence means, or what it implies.

i am not sure where i am lacking . is it just my poor comprehension of words , or something more deeper than that ..

You might have Attention Deficit Disorder, or some other learning difficulty. You might find it easier to access a teacher who tests for this than to find a neurologist in your part of India. But I don't think we can diagnose you from here on the basis of what you've said. There are special tests for this kind of thing. Have you explained your problems to your teachers or anyone else locally?

    Re: hoping for some solution

i havent consulted anyone yet. i am not really confident of being able to explain my shortcomings.

Hwever, i am desperate to know whethr i am indeed suffering from any disorder.
whom should i consult ?? is there a specialist who looks into such matters.

or should i just register myself in of those english teaching courses.
