    Cool difficult exrecise.

    Hi,

I have some difficult homework to do. We have to complete the following sentence with a suitable verb in the correct form.

They ordered the most expensive things on the menu because they knew that I ___________ the bill.

The verb must be one of the followings:

elbow / eye / foot / head / shoulder / thumb. Witch is the verb?

Yes, it's foot. I"ve found an example:

Could we have the bill, please?
Her mother agreed to foot (= pay) the bill.

Two possibilities for the proper tense:
"......because they knew that I would foot the bill."
"....because they knew that I was footing the bill."
The homework is complicated because it includes an idiom along with choosing the proper verb tense.

First they hand you the bill; then you eye it, maybe thumb it a little, and then you foot it. I can't see that your head, elbow or shoulder would be employed.

The guest might "head" to the bathroom once he or she doesn't feel like footing the bill.

My father's cousin used to pretend he got poisoned, he put soap in his mouth and then fell on the floor asking for help. Some scene!

No wonder he got arrested many times.

Hmm ... I think they should give him the elbow if he doesn't shoulder his responsibilities.
