Question pop his pumps = die?

When the head of RCA Records was told that Elvis had died, he is said to have remarked: 'Great career move.'
His modern counterpart at Sony must have entertained similar sentiments after being informed that Michael Jackson had popped his pumps.
    Hello!

    Q1: Great carreer move' =?

Q2: pop his pumps = die? Is it an idiom or slang?

    Thanks!

Re: pop his pumps = die?

Great career move is sarcasm just trying to be funny and make a joke or be wise. The idea behind it could be that since their deaths - "look how much money they are making".

Instead 'pop his pumps' the British often say "popped his or her clogs" , clogs are Dutch wooden shoes, "pumps" means "small training shoes whithout laces which young school children wear". "Popped his pumps" = died
