    Heavy-handedness

    Regarding the thread "blasphemous place":
BobK said, before closing down a perfectly legitimate question:

Your information is right. Shaw's understanding of Christian teachings was limited. The reasons for his use of the word were nothing to do with language. He was being intentionally provocative. I wonder if you are...

Just in case, I'm closing this thread.

Why, Bob? It seemed like a perfectly good question about the meaning of the passage. yuheci has asked other questions before, and they don't seem provocative. Sorry, but I really think that pre-emptively closing a thread is unnecessary censorship - as if there are some things that learners are not supposed to know.

What evidence do you have that Shaw's understanding of Christian teachings was limited? Is it simply because he disagreed with them?
Have you closed the thread because you don't agree with Shaw's views?

yuheci, I'm sorry this had to happen to you. I think you deserve an answer to your question, and I'll send it to you privately.

I love the Aussie sense of fairness.... among the best and most civilized in the world.

On the other hand, I've found BobK to be very moderate and tolerant, using good judgment at all times.

Then again, I haven't read the whole thread mentioned.

As a moderator in another forum, I know that it's a harder job than people realize. You develop a sense of when things are likely to boil over and stray pretty far from anything related to English. Moderators deserve the benefit of the doubt.

I realise it's not an easy job. I take you for a fair person, Barb. Read the original "blasphemous place" post and ask yourself if you would have cut this person off with an accusation of being deliberately provocative. Do you think things were threatening to boil over at the time the thread was closed?

Even though I'm not a Moderator here, I also have a fairly good idea of when people are making trouble. This guy wasn't.
Anyhow, that's all I want to say.
