    usage of late

"late" could mean dead ,"late" could also mean former,so when you say late president or late husband ,how do you decide what the "late" means here?

If a woman says 'My late husband' it means that her husband is dead. If she is divorced she would say 'My former husband'.

I would only use late to mean dead.

when you say" the late president" ,what does it mean, does it mean that the president has died,or he is not longer the president?

    Re: usage of late

If I said the late president, I'd mean he was dead. I think that would be the normal usage. Other people might use late but mean former, I wouldn't, but it should be clear from the context. 9/10 I'd bet on dead.
