    That whole sentence and the black part by itself both make no sense. Did you copy it correctly?

    The passage is:

    He (Rhett Butler) applauded her triumphs, where(=whereas) Frank merely smiled indulgently, and Pitty said "Dear me!" in a dazed manner. She was sure that he frequently threw business her way, for he knew all the rich Yankees and Carpetbaggers intimately, but he always denied being helpful.
