Hi! What is the exact meaning of the following sentences? The passage is from a political text. In fact it is from a telegram sent by an embassy and has a special shortened style. We have attempted to assure British on this point here orally but have not been able to do so in writing as we would thereby get ourselves into a position of backing to the end every last word and comma of documents yet to be agreed for next approach.
Thanks very much.

What don't you understand? Is there a word or a phrase you don't understand?

I can understand why the Iranian Embassy would communicate with the British in English but why on earth are they communicating with you/the person requesting the confirmation in English? Surely they would use the language they share.

The excerpt you quoted is very badly written but effectively it means that the embassy isn't prepared to put anything in writing because they are not prepared to comment on documents that haven't been finalised yet.
