I have tried to use "an expanse of the blue sea and sky", but I am not sure if my sentence makes sense in English. Would you please correct my mistakes or make a suggestion how to improve my sentence?

A few yachts sailed across an expanse of the blue sea and sky.

Yachts don't sail across the sky. Consider using "horizon" instead in that sentence.
