[General] a good sort/ a bad lot

Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me your opinion concerning the expression in bold in the following sentences? Do you use them in the contemporary language?

An attractive man, with his crisp dark hair, brown complexion, little dark mustache and rather high soft voice; a good sort, energetic and upright-looking.

And Liewellyn has been pretty decent. Did I tell you? He half-promised to let me consult at the hospital. And the Committee, - they aren’t a bad lot when you cut out the Chenkin crowd.- I believe in time where Liewellyn retired they might have made me head doctor in the place.

a good sort = a likable, friendly person

a bad lot = a bad or wicked person

[Heterological]

I believe you are correct, although we do not use these terms in the U.S.; I've read enough British books and magazines to be familiar with them. They are rather informal. The American equivalents would probably be "a good guy" and "a loser."
