I am wondering if my sentence is grammatically correct. I have used the present in the last part of my sentence and am wondering if it could be used in my sentence, or it must be the past.

A group of feminists have organised a protest against a beauty contest in the town, claiming it denigrates women.

It's OK. You will also see "A group ... has ...". It all depends on whether the writer considers the subject to be the singular "group" or all the feminists together as "they" - plural.
