I am wondering if my sentences are grammatically correct.

A journalist asked the winner what was the key to his victory in the race. He replied that it was patience. He waited and waited until the right moment came and then took off in a sprint, which others couldn't follow.

I am wondering if my sentences are grammatically correct.

A journalist asked the winner what [strike]was[/strike] the key to his victory in the race was. He replied that it was patience. He waited and waited until the right moment came and then took off in a sprint, which others couldn't follow.
With "was" moved to its natural place in the first sentence, the second gets repetitive. You could shorten it to He replied: "patience."

The final comma breaks the flow and isn't necessary.
