[Grammar] a million versus a million of

What will happen if I change "a million species" into "a million of species"? Is it still considered grammatically correct?

A recent report found that over a million species are at imminent risk of extinction, so we really can’t afford to hold back our work.

No, though you can say millions of.

The sky will not fall if you do it. But it is very old-fashioned. Nobody does it nowadays and you shouldn't either.

I recommend you use it only in something like this:

There are two million species of insect in this country. A million of them can be found only in the south-east.

As you can see, you can use "a million of" before a pronoun, but not before a noun.
