A new family private tutor needs time to know more about the little boy's academic background and his character before drafting a lesson plan solely for him, plus building up trust between them so they can get along well.

What should I describe this particular period of time in getting to know more about the student?

Orientation period?
Warm up period?
Familiarisation period?
Transition period?
Other suggestions?

Many thanks.

Only #3 (if you had numbered them) sounds good to me.

You need to reorder the adjectives at the beginning. "A new family private tutor" implies that the family is new or that family is being used as an adjective, as in: she is a 'family tutor' (I doubt that is the case).

Your adjectives should be ordered by: 1. owner (or article), 2. type, etc. I suggest: The family's new private tutor...

A suggestion: "a get-to-know-each-other period"?

She is a private tutor hired to tutor the little boy; not Mother, Father, Grandma, Grandpa, or anyone else in the family.

I'm pretty sure no one would think a family tutor means tutor for grandma.

I've privately tutored a number of grandparents - one as young as 35.
